Frequently Asked Questions

Without going into too much detail, Classic Extensions are glued one-by-one to individual lashes. On average, people have 150 top lashes per eye. While not all of your lashes will be able to support an extension, that's still a lot of lashes!! A full set of extensions will take 2 - 3 hours to complete. The process should be completely comfortable - many clients fall asleep! If you do feel any discomfort during an application, it's important that you speak up right away so that potential issues can be addressed immediately.

There are a number of factors that affect retention. First and foremost is a client's natural shed rate. On average, we lose between 6 and 10 eyelashes per week. Other factors include humidity, after-care routines, products used on the extensions, etc. Typically, clients will find that they will want a fill after 2 - 3 weeks, as there will be visible gaps at this point, as well as grown-out extensions that start to twist and can damage natural lashes if left on.

Two of the most popular types of eyelash extensions are synthetic silk and synthetic mink. Silk lashes closely mimic human hair, have a natural feel, and provide a more subtle look. Synthetic mink lashes are shinier, stiffer, and a bit more dramatic. All extensions come in different lengths, thicknesses, and curl levels. At Lash Lass YYC, every appointment begins with a consultation, when I will help you determine which type works best for you.

Classic Extensions are applied to natural lashes on a 1:1 basis - one extension to one natural lash.

Volume Extensions are applied to natural lashes in fans of 2-9 extensions per natural lash. The number of extensions in a fan is often referred to as 2D, 3D, etc.

Hybrid Extensions are a mix of classic and volume extensions. The volume fans are typically 2D-4D. Hybrids can be used to create different textures, a spikey look, or for a look that's fuller than classics but lighter than volume!

Excellent question! Aftercare is a major factor in the retention of your extensions and the health of your lashes, so I go over after care with all of my clients at every appointment.

  1. The single most important part of aftercare is keeping your extensions clean. Use an oil-free cleanser regularly to remove oils and any other products/residues from your extensions. Soap and water won't damage them, but oil will - the cleaner they are, the longer they last!
  2. Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, tanning beds, and any excessive heat for the first 24 hours.
  3. Do not use any store-bought mascara. A single use of store-bought mascara will reduce your retention by 50%.
  4. Do not use any products with oils around the eye area, as it will cause the adhesive to break down.
  5. Avoid touching your extensions as much as possible.
  6. Do not use an eyelash curler. Attempting to curl your extensions will break them, and likely your natural lash as well.

Filling another artist's work is often a challenge. Let's face it - you didn't go back to them for a reason. Depending on the state of your existing extensions, there may be a surcharge for filling someone else's work, or it may be necessary to do a full removal (at no cost) and a complete new set.
